massage therapy

An effective, natural therapy and preventative approach for managing injuries, chronic pain and stress, addressing structural and postural imbalances in the body and generally moving towards optimal health.

Massage therapy is an effective, natural therapy and preventative approach for managing injuries, chronic pain and stress, addressing structural and postural imbalances in the body and generally moving towards optimal health.

While the use of massage stretches back to antiquity worldwide, the practice of medical massage has grown significantly over the course of the past several decades. Scientific and diagnostic advances now demonstrate that massage is an evidence-based therapeutic practice.

In BC, the profession became regulated when the ‘Association of Physiotherapists and Massage Practitioners of BC (APMP) was founded in 1946 and was legislated under the BC Health Professions Act.

In 2001 the Health Professions Council defined the scope of practice of massage therapy as “the assessment of soft tissue and joints of the body and the treatment and prevention of dysfunction, injury, pain and physical disorders of the soft tissues and joints by manual and physical methods to develop, maintain, rehabilitate or augment physical function to relieve pain and promote health”.
